The Badminton Training at PPR Kg Baru Hicom was a result of the community recognising the need for more youth-centric initiatives. The community initially did the training in the open-air courtyards within the PPR, utilising existing space that gathers children to interact and play. Led by coaches from J8 Autism Athletics, the initiatives evolved over the two years with later sessions held at a more conducive court nearby.

These case studies illustrate Think City's work in housing over the past decade which included managing grants and loans, and conducting studies and pilot interventions, often in partnership with the a multitude of stakeholders. While past accounts have emphasized Malaysia’s success in providing access to key development drivers such as infrastructure, health, and education services, the new model pays greater attention to the quality of growth issues as expressed in the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030.

This study explores a specific public housing project in Shah Alam – PPR Kampung Baru Hicom (PPR Hicom), where Think City and its partners have had a presence since the beginning of 2020. Findings were compiled over a year, using a mix of methodologies outlined in the sections below. The study period overlaps with the Covid-19 pandemic, during which time the community faced extraordinary challenges linked to disrupted livelihood, mental health and more. Existing challenges within the community were exacerbated and more vulnerabilities exposed during this time.

K2K INDAH is a child nutrition programme organised at three public housing complexes in Selangor State: PPR Kampung Baru Hicom, PPR Kota Damansara and five blocks at Desa Mentari low-cost housing. The selected housing estates and blocks comprise a total of 5008 households, of which 886 households applied for the K2K INDAH programme. Of these, 857 are eligible for the programme.
